Retail Store Operations

The Situation

instructor-led1-retail-optionsOur client, an emerging retail dollar store, was seeking a training vendor to design courseware for each of their 10 job functions within the store environment as well as a vendor to provide training facilitation services to train all new employees for their new store openings to train all aspects of store operations from baggers to cashiers to grocery merchandising and store management.

The Solution

Total Training Solutions provided a team of 5 instructional designers to develop the customized training course curriculum. Developed materials included end-user reference guides, job aids, supporting operations forms, and facilitator training guides. Course topics included bagging, stocking, cash handling, checkout operations, direct delivery, store manager operations, perishables, customer service, etc. Total Training Solutions provided the team of trainers to facilitate all new store setup and personnel training by job role. This training began 4 – 6 weeks prior to new store opening. Total Training Solutions then provided new store opening management support during the grand opening of each new store location. The client eventually transitioned its business to Mexico. All training materials developed by Total Training Solutions were converted to Spanish to support the new store openings in that geographic region.

The Success

The client successfully opened 10 new store locations in the Chicagoland region and one store in Mexico and trained approximately 75 – 100 employees per new store. The client transitioned its operations to Mexico to establish a more profitable business model and has grown to over 350 stores with 7,500 employees, making it the largest dollar store chain in Latin America. The training curriculum designed by Total Training Solutions continues to support the training needs of the company.
